Understanding Obesity
What is Obesity?
Obesity is an excess proportion of total body fat. A person is considered obese when his or her weight is 20% or more above normal weight. The most common and simplest way to determine if someone is obese is calculating his or her BMI (Body Mass Index). A person is considered overweight if his or her BMI is between 25 and 29.9. A person is considered obese if his or her BMI is over 30.
What Causes Obesity?
Obesity occurs when a person consumes more calories than he or she burns. For many people this boils down to eating too much and exercising too little.
There are other factors that also play a role in obesity. These factors include: Age, Gender, Genetics, Environmental, Psychological, Illness and Medication.

Health Consequences
Research has shown that as weight increases to reach the levels referred to as "overweight" and "obesity,"* the risks for the following conditions also increases:
-
Coronary heart disease
-
Type 2 diabetes
-
Cancers (endometrial, breast, and colon)
-
Hypertension (high blood pressure)
-
Dyslipidemia (for example, high total cholesterol or high levels of triglycerides)
-
Stroke
-
Liver and Gallbladder disease
-
Sleep apnea and respiratory problems
-
Osteoarthritis (a degeneration of cartilage and its underlying bone within a joint)
-
Gynecological problems (abnormal menses, infertility)
*Overweight is defined as a body mass index (BMI) of 25 or higher; obesity is defined as a BMI of 30 or higher. For more, see Defining Obesity.
